Bikkuriman was first released in 1977. A delicious snack that hid a wonderful surprise: a small collectable sticker. Since “Bikkuri” means surprise in Japanese the goal was simple: surprising people with a prize. The stickers became progressively more and more sophisticated until in 1985 the Devil VS Angel series, was released and it became a big hit. Now these stickers were no longer collectable items, they came with a story and you could play games with them.
Amazing Success.
In fact, these stickers became so highly coveted that children were more interested in the stickers that the actual candy (unbelievable, I know), so they threw away the wafers, and kept the sticker only. This later became such a big issue in Japan that it lead to an unprecedented ban, The amount on Bikkuriman you could buy was only 2 to 3 packs per customer. Since then bikkuriman lost some popularity until 2013 came along and the Lotte illustrators made collaborations with popular anime series, which obviously made Bikkuriman cool again.
The Secret to success.
You might be wondering: but wait, How did Bikkuriman became so popular?, there’s plenty of candy around that comes with stickers. Well, the answer to that is rather simple, they released holographic stickers, and then gave them a backstory, that you could obviously just follow, by collecting all the stickers (genius move). They even managed amazing movie, tv, and even video game collaborations, and currently there’s Bukkuriman collaborations with the likes of: Star wars, One piece, sports personalities, and more which has kept them cool to this day.
