Welcome to the world of Gintama. Once you’re in it, you’re never coming back — as Gintama, a manga illustrated by Hideaki Sorachi, is one none like any other with its outstanding comedy and occasional intense seriosity.
With idiotic Gintama characters like Gintoki, Kagura, and the Shinsengumi characters, Gintama is a very popular manga and anime due to the bizarre events that take place in the city of Edo.
Fun fact: “Gintama” means “silver soul” in Japanese, with “gin” meaning “silver” and “tama” meaning “soul”. With “kin” meaning “gold” in Japanese, If the silver in “Gintama” was gold, then the title of the show would’ve been “Kintama”, which means “balls” in Japanese. Therefore, it would be more appropriate to call Gintama comedic silver, instead of comedic gold.
Why is Gintama Popular?
Gintama Characters are the Key
There are many factors in Gintama that make both the manga and the animated version of it so unique and special. One of the many specialties of the show is its characters. The fact that each Gintama characters defines itself from each other might possibly be Gintama’s greatest achievement.

The Reason why Gintama Characters are Attractive
1. Main Gintama Character: Gintoki
The main Gintama character. Gintoki is as disorganized as he looks, and as laid back as any shonen anime main character can get. He often seems not to care about anything, and he is rarely serious about anything. People describe him to have “dead-fish eyes” due to them nearly always being half-lidded, and also because of his lack of expression.
Although portrayed as an irresponsible character most of the time, Gintoki is the one people depend on in crucial moments. This gap in personality is what makes him a very favorable character to the fans, with him placing first, and Shinsengumi officers Hijikata and Sougo coming second and third, respectively, in every single character popularity poll. His goods, of course, are also very popular too.
2. Heroine(?) of Gintama: Kagura
Kagura is the least typical shonen manga heroine ever to be seen. Although portrayed as a young teenage girl with cute appearances, Kagura has many habits a traditional heroine wouldn’t have, thanks to the influence of Gintoki. She vomits, picks her nose, and is very sadistic.
If you were expecting a normal, lovable heroine from a manga like Gintama, then you were very mistaken.
3. “Glasses” : Shinpachi
Last and maybe least, Shinpachi is too, a very iconic Gintama character. Because of the unusual, unique characters around him, Shinpachi is a character that stands out to the viewers because of him being very average. When people like Gintoki or Kagura say or do idiotic things, Shinpachi is the straight man and points it out. In fact, because most of the Gintama characters are idiotic in the world of Gintama, Shinpachi stands out because of his role as the straight man.
Although an average teenage boy in the show, Shinpachi merchandise is very popular.
